First solo flight: how students prepare and what really happens

Moving to solo flights is a key milestone in private pilot training. Here is how readiness is assessed before a student flies alone.

A first solo flight is not an unexpected event. Students work toward it step by step while the instructor evaluates consistency, radio discipline, situational awareness and the ability to make safe decisions within the training programme.

The decision to release a student for solo flight is made only when the student demonstrates sufficient readiness for the specific exercise and conditions. Weather, aerodrome traffic, aircraft readiness and the student’s current state all matter.

On the day of the first solo, the instructor remains on the ground and supervises the process within established procedures. The task is usually simple and familiar: a circuit flight or another exercise that has already been practised with the instructor.

AviaStudy Global conducts training within the scope of certification in the system of the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine. Training progress is part of the candidate’s pathway, while licence issuance remains the decision of the authorised aviation authority.
